Debit Card

A card issued by a credit union allowing the holder to transfer money electronically to another credit union account when making a purchase.

Loan

A loan is money, property or other material goods that is given to a borrower in exchange for future repayment of the loan value amount along with interest or other finance charges. Typical credit union loans include personal loans, auto loans, and mortgage loans.

Direct Deposit

The electronic transfer of a payment directly from the account of the payer to the recipient's account. Many employers offer direct deposit to employees in place of physical checks.

Mobile Banking

A service provided by a credit union that allows its customers to conduct financial transactions remotely using a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.

Certificate of Deposit

A certificate issued by a credit union to a person depositing money for a specified length of time. Certificates of deposit typically range from six months to five years in length.

Online Banking

A method of banking with a credit union in which transactions are conducted electronically via the Internet (i.e. banking online).

Checking Account

An account at a credit union against which checks can be drawn by the account depositor. Additionally, this is a non-interest bearing account that often supports direct deposits.

Savings Account

An account at a credit union that bears interest. Unlike investment accounts, they are federally insured, which means up to $250,000 of the money in your account is insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

Club Accounts

An interest-bearing savings account offered by a credit union to investors looking to save for particular purpose, such as a holiday vacation. A club account is funded by the investor when it is opened, and typically remains open for one year.

A Social Security Number

A U.S. or official foreign government-issued photo ID (like a Driver’s License, State ID, Passport)

If your identification does not have your current address, please be sure to bring any of the appropriate documents to validate your residential address, such as:

  • Utility bill or utility hookup
  • Vehicle registration
  • Letter from Social Security office
  • Lease agreement
  • Real Estate Tax Record
  • Mortgage document if you recently purchased a new home
  • Voter Registration Card
  • Educational institution transcript
  • W-2 or 1099 for the most recent tax year
  • Renter’s insurance policy

Small fee and minimum deposit (amount varies by credit union)

Small deposit in a savings account (called a share account at credit unions; amount varies by credit union)
